HOLIDAY DOOR DECORATING!!
For the second year running our lab won the Holiday Door Decorating contest thanks to the creative mind of our very own Allison Mattern!! This years door was designed after the Polar Express and included pictures of all us with Dr. Sutherland as the conductor of the train!

PUMPKIN CARVING CONTEST
Each year the Graduate students have a lab pumpkin decorating contest. It is always fun (and challenging) to try and come up with a creative pumpkin that reflects our labs research in some way. We have Allison to thank for coming up with this clever idea of making an electron transport chain!!
Press play for the complete experience!
CONGRATULATIONS TO RAY!!
Congratulations to Ray Tsao for passing his qualifying exam in December and becoming an official Microbiology PhD candidate!!

Sutherland Lab alum Sarah Garner sent a photo after her white coat ceremony as she begins her medical school journey at Jefferson University. Good Luck Sarah!!
Summer 2025 Sutherland Lab Updates!
And just like that the Summer has ended and the the Fall semester has begun here at the University of Delaware! But before we jump into all the excitement of the new semester, pumpkin spice lattes and the crisp Fall weather, below is an overview of what our lab was up to over the Summer months.
Over the Summer Dr. Sutherland attended the International Conference on Biological Inorganic Chemistry in California. Tania attended the American Chemical Society conference, and Alicia attended the GRC Metals conference.

Tyana Spindle presenting her research Engineering Single Amino Acid Mutations to Analyze Heme Interactions in System I Cytochrome c Biogenesis at the INBRE Summer Scholars poster session. Many thanks to Allison for mentoring Tyana this Summer!!

Evelyn McQuaid presenting her research Engineering Single Amino Acid Mutations to Analyze Beta-cap of CcsBA System II Cyctochrome c Biogenesis Pathway at the INBRE Summer Scholars poster session. Many thanks to Ray for mentoring Evelyn this Summer!!
The Sutherland lab won the team spirit award at Field Day thanks to all the hard work by our grad students to make our awesome T-shirts!!

Spring 2025 Sutherland Lab Updates!
As Summer quickly approaches we thought it would be a great time to share with you all of the exciting work that our lab has produced over the past several months!
First and foremost, Allison Mattern passed her qualifying exam in May, a critical hurdle on transitioning from coursework to dissertation research!! Congratulations on becoming an official PhD candidate!!!
Congratulations to our graduating undergraduate researchers Sarah Garner and Donna Price, who have both been valuable members of the Sutherland lab over the past few years. We wish them the best as they move forward in their careers! Donna won the Biological Sciences Undergraduate Research Award – awarded to the graduating biology senior who has shown exceptional ability in academics and research. Sarah won the Biological Sciences Academic Excellence Award – awarded to the seniors who display overall academic excellence. Sarah also won the Paynter Memorial Award – awarded to the graduating biology senior with the highest academic index and outstanding person qualities who is going to medical school.
Check out the UDaily article on mentorship in the Sutherland lab! The article features undergraduate researcher Sarah Garner and graduate student Alicia Kreiman with a focus on their mentoring relationship which led not only to Sarah’s successful defense of her Senior Thesis but also Sarah’s co-authorship on Alicia’s recent paper in mBio!
Evelyn McQuaid and Tyana Spindle have received DE INBRE Summer Research Scholarship awards and will be with us full time over the Summer honing their research skills!!
